Magic Knight Rayearth is written by CLAMP, a popular
team of 4 ladies. It was first appeared in Nakayoshi magazine.
Kodansha, Ltd.,
who had also brought us Sailor Moon, published the manga back in 1994.
The original version consists of 3 volumes for Magic Knight Rayearth
and also 3 for Magic Knight Rayearth 2.
The storyline was simple at the beginning. Three ordinary girls from present Tokyo were transported to another dimension named Cefiro. According to Cefironian legend, outer dimension's citizens transported to Cefiro had got to be The Legendary Magic Knights. They would only be summoned if Cefiro was on its way to destruction. These girls had to struggle hard to clear their path to become real Magic Knights, as certain people who weren't pleased with their arrival would definitely make all efforts to stop them, and finally to confront those who intended to destroy or conquer Cefiro. But as the plot develops, we'll find that the whole matter isn't as simple as we expected. The truth behind the Legend of Magic Knights was shocking. The battle caused death of people they respected, as well as griefs and regrets to those who survived. What makes this manga worth reading is the way CLAMP cleverly manipulated such classic theme and making it a fluent, interesting story, although not too genuine either. They didn't only offer action, humor and romance, but also reflections of deep thoughts about various matters. Conflicts between one's own interests and the needs of the society, or between love and obligation, the meaning and value of friendship, the power of strong motivations, all combined to create an entertaining title. Another interesting fact is that most of the characters' and places' names were taken from car brands. See if you can find them and tell from which company they come from! |
